Simon Thomson is Professor of Hybrid Learning at the University of Manchester, with expertise in mixed-modal education and digital pedagogy. He is the creator of the SPaM framework and has led numerous national and international projects on technology-enhanced learning.

Profile

Simon Thomson is Professor of Hybrid Learning at the University of Manchester with a research interest in mixed-modal education, particularly the value of modes in the context of hybrid learning.

With a track record of developing and supporting digital pedagogic practice in higher education, he has helped institutions better understand the relationship between digital tools and pedagogic approaches to enhance teaching and learning. He has led several funded research projects, including a JISC/HEA-funded OER initiative under Phase 1 of the UKOER programme, an institution-wide pilot evaluating the impact of 1:1 tablet devices on learner attainment, a HEFCE-funded project exploring next-generation digital learning environments, and a British Council partnership supporting Peruvian universities in transitioning online during the Covid-19 pandemic. He is regularly invited to speak and facilitate workshops at national and international events, especially on his openly licensed hybrid education Subject, Pedagogy and Modality (SPaM) framework.

Simon holds a PhD in TEL and E-Research from the University of Lancaster, was awarded an HEA National Teaching Fellowship in 2014, is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, SEDA-accredited in Embedding Learning Technologies, and an Apple Distinguished Educator.
